Hurricane Charley

Orlando, Florida.   Friday August 13, 2004

about 9:15 pm

Hurricane Charley slammed into Florida's west coast August 13, quickly leaving a broad swath of  death  and destruction from Punta Gorda straight thru Orlando and exiting florida at Daytona Beach. After traveling some 130 miles up the Florida peninsula over land no one thought it would do this much damage. Many orlando locals thought they were completely safe this far inland. Hurricane Charley struck Orlando Florida with 105 mile an hour winds. Down graded from the category 4 that struck Punta Gorda Fl. Charley was still a strong category 1 hurricane as the eye passed thru Orlando Fl. all the pictures on this page were taken in the Greater Orlando, Florida area. Most of the Damage was done by falling trees, although a great deal of damage was done to signs and roofs from the high winds every where you go there is a fallen tree tangled in power lines.

Estimated just after the storm struck that damage from Charley could exceed US$15 billion. Damage in Orlando alone is estimated at $3.2 billion. The latest estimate on total damage is $11 billion, which would make Charley the second most costly hurricane in American history, behind Hurricane Andrew's $26 billion in 1992, and above Hurricane Hugo's $7 billion in 1989. The $11 billion figure, while high, is still expected to rise.

State officials Friday said 25 people have died in Florida because of Hurricane Charley

and  destroyed as many as 10,000 homes statewide
