Florida deaths blamed on Hurricane Charley

State officials Friday said 25 people have died in Florida because of Hurricane
Charley. The following describes some of those deaths:
CHARLOTTE COUNTY, 4:
_ Joanne Hawkins, 82, and Gordon Hawkins, 83, died Aug. 13 after refusing to leave their Punta Gorda trailer home during Hurricane Charley.
_ Burton MacLeod, 76, a retired Cape Cod, Mass., restaurant owner, bled to death Aug. 13 after a piece of glass cut his leg at his Punta Gorda apartment.
_ No details were made available on the other death.
COLLIER COUNTY, 1:
_ A 37-year-old man died Aug. 20 from head injuries sustained two days earlier. No other information was immediately available.
DESOTO COUNTY, 1:
_ Larry Turner, 53, died Aug. 13 of injuries sustained while trying to ride out the storm in a storage container transformed into a tool shed. The container flipped several times in Charley's 145 mph winds.
HARDEE COUNTY, 1:
_ Hardee County Elections Supervisor Dean Cullins, 60, died Aug. 16 in bed of a heart attack. His pre-existing medical conditions were aggravated by a power outage and his work clearing fallen tree limbs and debris around his home.
HIGHLANDS COUNTY, 1:
_ A 55-year-old man died of heat-related stress on the heart.
LEE COUNTY, 4:
_ Danny Williams, 25, of North Fort Myers, died Aug. 13 when a banyan tree fell on him.
_ Howard Jones, 56, was found dead in his home Aug. 14 after he operated his gas-powered generator in an attached shed.
_ A 74-year-old man died from heat-related stress on the heart.
_ A 68-year-old man died Aug. 20 of injuries sustained a day earlier. The cause of death was listed as carbon monoxide poisoning/trailer fire.
ORANGE COUNTY, 3:
_ Camille Celina Vilar, 8, of St. Cloud, died Aug. 13 in a storm-related crash on the Bee Line Expressway in east Orange County.
_ A 48-year-old man died Aug. 14 of head injuries after a vehicle accident.
_ A 37-year-old man died Aug. 18 after falling 60 feet from a tree he had been cutting.
OSCEOLA COUNTY, 1:
_ A person was killed in a car accident Aug. 16 in Osceola County south of Orlando.
POLK COUNTY, 6:
_ Jerry Padgett Jr., 61, of Lake Wales, died Aug. 13 after his Chevrolet truck drove into a washed-out section of a road and flipped over, sending the vehicle about 35 feet down an embankment.
_ Robert Banks, 50, of Winter Haven, and his stepson, Michael Thompson, 33, died from apparent carbon-monoxide poisoning after using an emergency generator in their home.
_ Anthony Turk, 65, of Haines City, died Aug. 13 after walking from his home to his van during the storm. The medical examiner attributed his death to his pre-existing heart disease compounded by the stress of the storm.
_ Jerry Allen Kane, 61, of Dundee, was found dead in his car Aug 14. He went to his car for air conditioning but did not have his oxygen tank with him.
_ An 86-year-old man who had evacuated his home fell and died while he was in a motel in Polk County.
SARASOTA COUNTY, 1:
_ Karen Ryan, 56, of Nokomis, died Aug. 13 in a car accident. She was driving south on Interstate 75 in Venice when she lost control in the rough weather. Her car skidded off the shoulder and struck a tree.
VOLUSIA COUNTY, 2:
_ Patrick Haley, 44, of Palm Coast, was killed Aug. 14 when a large section of a tree fell on him while he was helping relatives clean up in the Florida Shores neighborhood of Edgewater.
_ An unidentified woman was electrocuted Aug. 14 after stepping on a downed
power line at the base of a utility pole on South Martin Luther King Boulevard.
